Katy Goodwin

I'm Katy Goodwin, a parenting educator with a Master's degree in Child Development from East Bridge University. I work with parents of children ages 3 to 9 who are doing what the gentle parenting books say and still end up repeating themselves and raising their voice by six o'clock.

How I got here

I came to this as a parent first. I tried the gentle scripts in a calm tone and explained everything, endlessly. The house got more tense. Every boundary felt more fragile. The gap between doing everything right and things still not working is what sent me into formal study. I wanted foundations I could trust.

My studies were about how children actually develop, psychologically and neurologically, through early childhood. The most useful thing I took from them is a simple distinction: what a child can understand is not the same as what they can do in a hard moment. Impulse control lags far behind language and reasoning. A five year old can repeat the rule back to you and still break it ten minutes later.

What I teach

Calm parenting collapses without structure. Children feel safe with an adult who is warm and steady at the same time: kind in tone, and predictable about what happens next. When a limit moves under pressure, a child learns to push harder, and the evening turns into a negotiation. When it holds, the pushing gets shorter.

So my work is practical: short phrases you can say in the moment, and what to stop doing when things get worse before they get better.

The research behind it

Where to start

If you are new here, start with my free guide, The Lottery Words and the free 11 minute class.

When you want the whole method, there is The Boundary System, my written guide for ages 3 to 9, and Decode Your Child, the video course. If your situation needs a plan written for your child, there is the Personalized Parenting Plan.

You can read what parents say about my work, in their own words.

Everything here is education for parents. It is not medical or psychological advice, and it does not replace a pediatrician or a child therapist when one is needed.
